History of Zahira Vidyalaya
Our school was started in 1876 by the Catholic Church in the name of Methodist Mission School (MMS) near the market in Akkaraipattu Sagama Road. Tamil and Muslim students study here. At that time, only Christian religious education was held in this school, and till 1952, even when Tamil and Muslim students from grades 1 to 7 were educated, more Tamil teachers taught. After that AL Abubakar Alim known as AS.Abdul Quds Maulavi was appointed to religious course.
During the period of 1970 - 1977, when Dr. Badiuddin Mahmood was the Minister of Education, this school was changed to Kamu/as-Zahira Vidyalaya as per the circular that the students of any category who study more in a particular school can be converted to that category.
Burned down completely during the country's communal riots in 1990. It was then shifted to a temporary tent on East Road (present day As Siraj Maha Vidyalaya) behind the present police station in Akkaraipattu. After that, two buildings were constructed and operated by the efforts of MI.Uthuma Lebbe who was the member of parliament in Pottuvil Zone.
At the end of 1991, Ak/as-Siraj Vidyalaya was upgraded to Az-Siraj Maha Vidyalaya due to the large number of students in the school, the space of the school was not found to be sufficient. After several rounds of talks between the two school managements, Ak/as-Zahira Vidyalaya was relocated to where Ak/as-Siraj Maha Vidyalaya was located and Az-Zahira Vidyalaya was relocated to where Az-Zahira Vidyalaya was located. For this an agreement was made between ARM. Junaid Sir and MA. Segu Ahmed Sir who were the principals of both the schools at that time.
After transfer of both the schools on 06.01.1992 the name of Ak/as-Zahira Vidyalaya was changed to Ak/Zahira Vidyalaya as the Arabic word 'Az' is a negative Tamil form of the Arabic word 'Az' which was the Principal then, and the 'S' in front of As-Zahira Vidyalaya was removed. After changing the name, the school is now running under the name Ak/Sahira Vidyalaya. * This school which has classes from 1st to 9th was selected as a nursery school of Ak/as-Siraj Maha Vidyalaya under the 1000 school development program under Mahinda's thinking and gradually each class was reduced and it was operating as a primary school from 2012 to 2017.
